St. Mary's Church in Ashford (49 KB)

If you do not have a car, in London take the tube to London Bridge. Then take the National Rail (Connex Line) train to Ashford and walk a short distance to the square surrounding (St. Mary’s) Church in Ashford.

The Visitor Information Center in Ashford is on one side of the church square. In this picture the postal letter carrier’s red handcart is parked in front of the building with the door on the left side and four windows visible on the first floor (second floor in U.S. terminology). The corner of (St. Mary’s Church) is visible on the left side of the picture. The building to the right of the visitor center was erected in 1630 by Sir Norton Knatchbull M.P. as a Free School which he endowed and gave to the town of Ashford. The interior is almost as it was 300 years ago and contains memorials of the school which was conducted here until 1870.

Brook is east of Ashford and south of Wye in County Kent. The people in the visitor’s center will be happy to call for a cab to take you the 5 or 6 miles to Brook. (The cost was about 11 British pounds in February 2004). The cab ride was delightful – narrow, one-lane roads with lay-by’s located at varying intervals. We went through Hinxhill and then were let out right in front of the church
